Two women sit absorbed in their books inside a railroad passenger car, a quiet scene of leisure in the middle of a journey. The photograph dates to about 1905, when long-distance train travel was a common and comparatively comfortable way to cross the country, and passengers often used the hours for reading, writing, and conversation. The print was copyrighted by the George R. Lawrence Co., a commercial firm that produced many photographic views of American places and everyday life in these years. Its interest lies in how ordinary it looks: it records the settled routine of women's social life on the rails rather than the machinery or the landscape outside.
