Few railroad posters of the period name their route as plainly as this one does, tying Rochester, New York, to Pittsburgh in its title alone. The Rochester and Pittsburgh Railroad was built largely to move coal and iron ore for the industrial district of western Pennsylvania, and its lines fed the mills and furnaces of that region. The date of 1883 comes from an unverified caption card, so the occasion behind the poster is uncertain. It still shows how railroads of the era advertised themselves to shippers and travelers.
