A railway viaduct strides across an autumn valley in this scene, its arches framed by trees turning gold and rust. The pairing of a rail line and a season-soaked landscape was a favorite theme of American painters and printmakers in the decades after the Civil War, when new tracks were opening up mountains and river valleys that had been remote only a generation earlier. Viewed together, the engineered arches and the loose, falling leaves show how artists of the period often treated the railroad as both a marvel of modern construction and a new feature of the natural world.
