Few Gulf ports were harder to reach than Mobile, and an 1864 view of its approaches shows why. The city sat well up the Mobile River at the head of a shallow bay, so ships had to pass a line of Confederate forts and underwater obstructions before reaching it. In August 1864, Admiral David Farragut led a Union fleet through the channel past Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines, a run that became one of the best-known naval actions of the war. Worth noticing is that the approaches, rather than the town itself, are the focus of the view.
