A map of northern New England's six states, with Maine drawn in full, is a useful way to see how the region's borders were set out in the early republic. Maps like this one were engraved and sold to schoolrooms, merchants and travelers, who relied on them to track post roads, county seats and the coastline that drove so much of the region's trade. Look at how Maine appears as the northeastern extension of Massachusetts before its 1820 separation, and at the careful outlines of the Connecticut River valley and Long Island Sound. The map shows the region as commerce and government saw it, with rivers and harbors doing most of the work of connecting towns.
