Where many maps of the region take in the whole interior, this engraving concentrates on the shoreline and the waters of Massachusetts Bay, the stretch that mariners and settlers needed to read most closely. Engraved maps like this one were cut into copperplates by hand and printed on paper, and they circulated among merchants, ship captains and readers in Europe and the colonies. The Massachusetts Bay Colony, founded in 1630, grew up along this coast, so a chart of its harbors and headlands carried practical as well as scholarly weight. The coastal detail is worth studying, since the outline of each bay and inlet shows how much surveyors could actually chart at the time.
