Lettered in Latin as *Nova Anglia*, this map shows the northeastern coast of North America at a time when European powers were still sketching out their claims there. The name New England came into common use after John Smith's 1616 account of the coast, and Latin titles like this one were typical of European maps made for merchants, scholars, and officials. Beyond the region itself, the map's surrounding territories show how the boundaries of neighboring colonies were still being argued over and redrawn. Such maps are useful for seeing how early Europeans understood the land before settlement fixed its borders.
