Drawn in pencil on June 29, 1809, this sketch shows Providence, Rhode Island, at a moment when the town was growing into one of New England's busiest seaports. It belongs to the John Rubens Smith Collection, which holds the English-born artist's detailed drawings of American towns and landscapes made in the first decade of the 1800s. Smith's work from these years is valued as an early record of how American cities looked before industrialization transformed them. The drawing was later reproduced in *Eyes of the Nation*, a 1997 survey of American visual history, which helps place it within the broader record of the young republic.
