The title places the viewpoint in the southern suburbs, looking north over the city of Providence. Roger Williams founded the settlement in 1636 after leaving Massachusetts Bay, and the town grew from a shipping port into a manufacturing center, known especially for textiles and jewelry in the 19th century. Views like this one show how church steeples and a dense commercial core rose above the river as the city expanded outward, and they are useful for seeing how the built landscape changed over those decades.
