The Blackstone River runs through the northern part of Rhode Island and into Massachusetts, and by the late 1800s its banks were lined with textile and machine works that drew on its falling water for power. Mills like those shown here turned the river's current into the steady energy that ran looms and spindles, and they shaped the villages that grew up around them. The Blackstone is often called the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution, since Samuel Slater's cotton spinning operations in nearby Pawtucket helped establish factory production in the country. Worth noticing in a scene like this is how the mill buildings, dams and workers' housing formed a single working landscape.
