Few things on a New England roadside announced themselves as boldly as a building shaped like a milk can. Its cylindrical form turns a dairy container into a shop, a sign that doubled as architecture, much like the hot dog stands and giant donuts that lined American highways in the early automobile era. The white annex attached to its side appears to be a plainer addition, a contrast that shows how such stands were often expanded as business grew. Novelty buildings like this were meant to be seen from a moving car, so their shapes did the advertising the owner could not afford in print.
