Indian Rock is a large, weathered boulder on the Narragansett shore, and it is the detail that gives this scene its name and its focus. The town takes its name from the Narragansett people, whose homeland covered much of what is now southern Rhode Island. Boulders like this one were deposited across the region when glacial ice retreated thousands of years ago. As summer cottages and hotels drew visitors to the coast in the late 1800s, rocks such as this became local landmarks worth photographing and remembering.
