Faneuil Hall, the brick market building on Dock Square in Boston, is the subject here, shown as an engraved frontispiece for the March 1789 issue of The Massachusetts Magazine, one of the more ambitious monthly periodicals of the young republic. The hall had been given to the town by merchant Peter Faneuil in 1742 and was long known as the "Cradle of Liberty" for the colonial town meetings held within it. Printed in the years just after the Revolution, the view captures a civic landmark that the new nation's readers would have recognized at once. Its engraving by S. Hill after a drawing by W. Pierpont reflects the period's growing taste for images of American places.
