Faneuil Hall, the brick market and meeting house at the center of Boston's waterfront, has hosted town meetings since Peter Faneuil gave the building to the city in 1742. By the 1930s it was already a fixture of the city's identity, and a photograph from around 1931 captures it at a moment when preservationists were beginning to treat the old structures along the harbor as worth saving. Its long upper meeting hall, where colonial agitators like Samuel Adams spoke against British policy, gave the building its nickname, "the Cradle of Liberty." The c1931 date places the picture before the area's later renovations, a useful record of the building's appearance in the years between the wars.
