Faneuil Hall Square sits in the heart of the old waterfront trading district, and this sketch shows how the hall, its open square, and the surrounding streets fit together on the ground. Peter Faneuil, a merchant, gave the market hall to Boston in 1742, and it became a gathering place for town meetings, which earned it the nickname "Cradle of Liberty" during the years before the Revolution. Charles Bulfinch enlarged the building in 1806. Today it is one of the sites within Boston National Historical Park.
