The particular interest of this plan is that it documents a single room, the Commandery Room, rather than the famous Great Hall on the ground floor where Samuel Adams and other patriots spoke. Drawn in the style of an architectural survey, it records the room's dimensions, the placement of its walls, windows, and fixtures, and how the space was laid out for its occupants. Faneuil Hall was built in 1742 with a gift from merchant Peter Faneuil and was enlarged by Charles Bulfinch in 1806, so plans like this one help show how the building was adapted over time for public meetings, military organizations, and other uses.
