Faneuil Hall, the brick market-and-meeting house on Dock Square in Boston, earned its nickname "the Cradle of Liberty" for the protest speeches and town meetings held under its roof before the American Revolution. Peter Faneuil, a merchant, gave the building to the town in 1742, and it was enlarged in 1806 by Charles Bulfinch, whose redesign gave it the second-floor meeting hall that still stands. Gatherings here drew patriot orators such as Samuel Adams and James Otis, and the hall's reputation as a forum for dissent made it one of the most recognizable sites in the city. Today it is part of Boston National Historical Park, and the market stalls on the ground floor remain in daily use.
