The view looks east toward Faneuil Hall with a row of boats drawn on the water in the foreground, which places the market at the edge of Boston's working harbor rather than inland. Peter Faneuil gave the building to the town in 1742, and its ground floor served as a market for decades. Charles Bulfinch enlarged the hall in 1806, and it was known as the "Cradle of Liberty" for the town meetings held upstairs. The engraving, made after a drawing by J. Andrews, shows how closely the market and the waterfront were tied together in the early nineteenth century.
