A print of the clipper ship *Surprise*, built in 1850 at East Boston by the shipbuilder Samuel Hall, whose yard produced some of the fastest vessels of its day. The image is a photographic reproduction of a painting, made around 1924 and copyrighted by A. Clive Edwards and the Foster brothers, so it shows the ship as an artist imagined her decades after her launch. Clippers like *Surprise* were built for speed in the tea, China and California trades of the 1850s, when owners raced to deliver cargo first. Notice the tall, raked masts and the wide spread of canvas that defined the type.
