Faneuil Hall stands out here for its role as a working market as well as a meeting place. Built in 1742 and funded by merchant Peter Faneuil, the brick building sits above a ground-floor market, and it became known as the "Cradle of Liberty" because colonial patriots gathered there to debate resistance to British policy. In this glass transparency, made by the Detroit Publishing Company between roughly 1890 and 1906, the photographer captured the hall as Boston's commercial center was still very much in use, a reminder that the building's civic and commercial functions have always been intertwined.
