Inside the great hall on Faneuil Hall's upper floor, rows of wooden seating face the speaker's platform, a layout that reflects the building's long life as a public forum. Peter Faneuil gave the market house and meeting hall to Boston in 1742, and the room later earned the nickname "Cradle of Liberty" for the protest meetings held there before the American Revolution. Charles Bulfinch enlarged the building in 1806, and this stereograph, published by H.C. White Co. around 1907, shows the hall as visitors of that era would have found it.
