Pyramid Lake in western Nevada takes its name from the tall tufa formation rising from its shore, and this view turns the camera on that pale stone pyramid and the rounded domes beside it. Timothy H. O'Sullivan made the picture in 1867 while working with Clarence King's U.S. Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel, and it appeared as plate 91 in the survey's published report. The lake is a remnant of Lake Lahontan, a much larger body of water from the last Ice Age, and the tufa deposits built up where mineral-rich spring water met the lake. Survey photographs like this one documented geology for the federal government, and they also capture the open, treeless landscape of the Great Basin that the expedition crossed.
