This view looks across the Golden Horn toward the Galata Bridge, the crossing that linked the old city of Istanbul with the Galata district on the opposite shore. The print was made by Abdullah Frères, the Ottoman studio of the Abdullah brothers, who were known for photographing the city and its imperial institutions. Its caption appears in both Ottoman Turkish and French, and it is one of several views in an album of naval and civic sites that belonged to Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Because the album pages were arranged by subject, the picture also shows how the Ottoman government presented its waterfront and infrastructure to visitors and officials in the 1880s.
