Galata Tower rises above the Galata district on the north shore of the Golden Horn, a stone cylinder that the Genoese colony built in the mid-14th century. The Abdullah Frères studio, a Constantinople firm with close ties to the Ottoman court, made this albumen print between 1880 and 1893, when the tower still served as a fire lookout over the crowded streets below. It comes from an album in the photographic collection associated with Sultan Abdul Hamid II, and the bilingual captions suggest the views were meant for an official or foreign audience. Look closely at the street in the foreground for a sense of the dense, sloping neighborhood.
