The Sultan Beyazit Camii, the mosque of Bayezid II, is shown here from inside, with its broad central space opening toward the mihrab, the niche that marks the direction of prayer. Completed in the early sixteenth century, it was one of the first large imperial mosques built in Istanbul after the Ottoman conquest of the city in 1453. Abdullah Frères, a photographic studio working in Constantinople, made the print between 1880 and 1893, and it was mounted in an album of mosques now held within the Abdul-Hamid II Collection at the Library of Congress.
