Few Ottoman interiors are as recognizable as the Ulu Cami in Bursa, and this view centers on the carved wooden minbar and the mihrab that marks the direction of prayer. Sultan Bayezid I commissioned the Great Mosque in the late fourteenth century, when Bursa was the Ottoman capital, and its hall beneath many domes remains one of its best-known features. The print comes from an album by Abdullah Frères, the Istanbul studio whose views are now part of the Abdul-Hamid II Collection, and its caption appears in both Ottoman Turkish and French. Look closely at the calligraphy and ornament, which the albumen process renders in fine, soft detail.
