This view looks down over the rooftops of Bursa, taken from the Hotel Bellvue, so the city's dense tiled roofs fill most of the frame rather than individual monuments. It was made by Abdullah Frères, the Istanbul studio of the Abdullah brothers, whose work for the Ottoman court is well documented. The print comes from an album of mosques, mausoleums, and town scenes in Bursa, Eskişehir, and İznik, which was part of the collection assembled under Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Bursa, the early Ottoman capital, is a useful place to notice how a city's roofline records its streets and neighborhoods.
