Few views of this mosque's interior survive from the 1880s, and this one centers on the mihrab, the niche in the qibla wall that marks the direction of Mecca. The Zal Mahmut Pasha Camii stands in Eyüp, the quarter on the Golden Horn that Ottoman Muslims regarded as especially sacred. The print comes from an album by Abdullah Frères, the Constantinople studio that was among the most prominent commercial photographers in the Ottoman capital and held an official imperial appointment. The album was assembled for Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, whose photographic collection documents the empire's mosques, palaces and cityscapes. Its captions appear in both Ottoman Turkish and French.
