Few things in early twentieth-century photography captured a skyline as busily as this view across the Golden Horn, the narrow inlet that divides old Stamboul from the Galata district of Constantinople. The stereograph, made around 1913 and issued by the firm Underwood & Underwood, shows the bridge crossing the water and the crowded waterfront beyond it. Stereo cards like this were sold in large numbers to American and European viewers who looked at them through hand viewers, so the image was meant to feel like standing on the bridge itself. The record's details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified, but the scene reflects a city then at the crossroads of Ottoman and European life.
