Few bridges of the early 19th century drew as much attention as the suspension span across the Menai Strait, which carries the road from Carnarvon onto the island of Anglesey. Thomas Telford, the engineer who designed it, completed the bridge in 1826, and its iron chains hung from tall stone towers made it a landmark of early suspension engineering. This plate appeared in 1838 in an atlas issued with a published life of Telford, so the engraving records the structure as its builders meant it to be seen. The scale included with the print lets viewers judge the span against the water and the towers.
