The pencil sketch shows the wreckage of a railroad bridge over the Monocacy River near Frederick, Maryland, with the words "Dead horses" written below the scene, a detail that points to the human and animal cost of the fighting there. The drawing dates to July 9, 1864, the day of the Battle of Monocacy, when a smaller Union force under Gen. Lew Wallace tried to halt Confederate Gen. Jubal Early's advance toward Washington. The battle delayed Early by a day, and the rail line through the valley was a key route for moving troops and supplies, so its destruction carried real military weight. Sketches like this one, made in the field, give a rough, immediate record of damage that later printed images often smoothed over.
