The bridge pictured here spanned the James River at Powhatan Point, the crossing the Army of the Potomac used in June 1864 as it shifted south of the river after the fighting at Cold Harbor. Army engineers assembled such floating bridges from pontoon boats, timber stringers, and planking, and a crossing of this size could carry troops, wagons, artillery, and supply trains in a steady stream. The campaign's move toward Petersburg depended on bridges like this one, and the photograph shows how much of the army's mobility rested on the engineers' work. Its record gives no photographer's name, so the image is best read as a document of the bridge itself and the logistics behind the operation.
