Drilling crews at Army of the Potomac headquarters near Brandy Station, Virginia, show the army's ambulances being put through their paces during the winter camp of March 1864. The Union ambulance corps had been reorganized under medical director Jonathan Letterman in 1862 so that trained drivers and wagons could reach wounded men on the field and carry them quickly to aid stations. The record dates the scene to 1864, though the print itself was made later, and it preserves a routine that civilians rarely saw, offering a close look at the logistics behind battlefield care.
