From a mountaintop station on Poney Mountain in Virginia, Union signal officers watched the camps of Gen. Robert E. Lee's army on the far side of the Rapidan River. Signal stations like this one were part of the Union army's communications network, where observers used telescopes and flag signals to pass word of enemy movements from peak to peak. The drawing is dated only to 1863 or 1864, a period when the two armies often faced each other across the Rapidan for weeks at a time. Its pencil lines show the wide, open country that officers on both sides had to read closely.
