Only one half of this stereograph pair is in the Library's collection: a view of Sugar Loaf Mountain and Webster's Station, published in 1866 as number 615 in the series *Gems of California Scenery*. The record ties it to the Placerville-Tahoe route, a road that carried travelers and freight from the gold country of El Dorado County up into the Sierra Nevada toward Lake Tahoe. Stations along such roads offered horses, meals, and rest to drivers and passengers, so a view of one would have interested viewers for its practical as well as its scenic value. Stereographs like this were meant to be seen through a hand viewer, which made the landscape appear to stand in three dimensions.
