Swift's Station sat on the Carson and Lake Bigler Road near the eastern summit of the Sierra Nevada, a stopping point where travelers and teams rested before or after the steep climb over the range. The road linked the Carson Valley with the lake then known as Lake Bigler, a name it carried before it became Lake Tahoe. This print is one half of a stereograph pair from the 1860s, issued in a series called Gems of California Scenery, and its subject tag of wagon trains and stage coaches points to the freight and passenger traffic that depended on roadside stations like this one.
