Printed on page 45 of a book, this woodcut shows mountains rising above a lake, a view that marks it as one of the landscape scenes in the series of fifty-three stations along the Tōkaidō. That road linked Edo, the shogunal capital, with Kyoto, the imperial city, and travelers moved between its post towns on foot or by palanquin. Hiroshige Utagawa made the series in 1833, and its color woodblock prints, with soft gradations of ink and a close eye for weather and seasons, quickly became popular with readers and collectors well beyond Japan.
