Mountain Lake, a natural lake in the high country of Giles County, Virginia, drew summer visitors who came to stay at the resort hotel on its shore. This long panoramic print, measuring 10 by 28 inches, was made by the Haines Photo Co., a firm known for wide-format views, and it was registered for copyright on July 10, 1914. Panoramas like this were popular souvenirs of hotels and their grounds in the early twentieth century, when railroads and improved roads made mountain resorts fashionable. The wide format keeps the lake and its surroundings in one continuous view.
