Five small cameo portraits share this carte de visite, with Empress Carlota at the center and Emperor Maximilian, Miguel Miramón, Ramón Méndez, and Benito Juárez arranged clockwise from the top. The montage was made for an album of figures tied to Maximilian's reign in Mexico, when a French-backed monarchy faced armed resistance from Juárez's republican forces. Miramón, a conservative general who fought for the imperial cause, was executed alongside Maximilian in 1867, which gives the grouping a grim meaning for later viewers who knew how the reign ended.
