Drawn in pencil from the center of the Union position, this view shows the ground where troops fought at Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia in May 1864, during Ulysses S. Grant's campaign against Robert E. Lee. The record dates it to May 9, the day Union assaults on the Confederate lines met fierce resistance and Maj. Gen. John Sedgwick, commander of the Union Sixth Corps, was killed by a sharpshooter. Field sketches like this one were often made quickly on campaign and later used as references for published illustrations, so the drawing records terrain as much as it records events.
