This pencil drawing focuses on the fighting west of the turnpike, where Confederate troops under Stonewall Jackson held a stone wall against Union forces commanded by General James Shields. The engagement took place on March 23, 1862, near Winchester, Virginia, and Southern accounts usually call it the Battle of Kernstown. It was one of the early clashes of Jackson's Shenandoah Valley campaign and ended as a tactical setback for him, which was unusual given his reputation at the time. The sketch is one of the Civil War drawings in the Library of Congress's collection.
