The Battle of Palo Alto, fought on May 8, 1846, was the first major engagement of the Mexican-American War, and this color lithograph by the New York firm Sarony & Major shows the clash as it was pictured for an eager American public. The battle took place on the coastal prairie of south Texas, where General Zachary Taylor's U.S. Army troops met a Mexican force under Mariano Arista. Printed within months of the fighting, the sheet belongs to a wave of lithographs that turned the war into a vivid, widely circulated story of American arms.
