Here the rattlesnake stands in for America itself, an emblem the colonists had claimed since Benjamin Franklin's 1754 "Join, or Die" woodcut. The catalog subject tags tie the print to the British surrender at Yorktown in October 1781. Published by William Humphrey on the Strand in April 1782, it appeared a few months after Lord Cornwallis gave up his army to Washington and the French, when opinion in London was turning against the war. The print is attributed to James Gillray, a caricaturist whose later work would make him famous, though the attribution is a scholarly judgment rather than a certainty.
