The title, "The Tea-Tax-Tempest, or the Anglo-American Revolution," casts the conflict over colonial taxes as a storm, and the German and French versions of the title show that the print was aimed at a European audience. It is attributed to the German engraver Carl Guttenberg and dated 1778, the year France allied with the American colonies against Britain. A related impression in the same collection includes a Gallic cock and bellows, which points to France's role in the war. The print belongs to a wave of European satirical imagery that followed the Boston Tea Party of 1773 and the imperial struggle that grew from it.
