Puck published this chromolithograph in its March 29, 1882, issue, where an American wall rises as its Chinese original comes down, a pointed comment on anti-Chinese feeling then running through the West. The drawing turns immigration policy into a picture of barricades, showing the United States building its own barrier as the older one falls. Within weeks Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, the first federal law to bar immigrants by nationality, which gives the cartoon a sharp sense of timing.
