Printed in New York around 1849, this satirical lithograph takes its title from the many ways people set out for California. Nathaniel Currier issued it from his Spruce Street shop during the gold rush, which followed the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in January 1848. Hopefuls reached the goldfields by sailing around Cape Horn, crossing overland by wagon, or taking the Isthmus of Panama route. Cartoons like this one poked fun at the era's reckless optimism and show how eastern audiences viewed the migration.
