The lithograph shows the three Young Ireland leaders, Thomas Francis Meagher, Terence Bellew MacManus and Patrick O'Donohue, at the moment they received their sentence at Clonmel in October 1848. The trial followed a brief and poorly organized uprising earlier that year, and the court's verdict drew wide attention in Ireland and abroad. Nathaniel Currier issued the hand-colored print in New York that same year, when many Irish immigrants and other Americans followed the cause closely. The sentence text printed beneath the scene signals the seriousness of the proceedings, which ended with the men's death sentences later commuted to transportation.
