The parable of the prodigal son, here shown at the moment the younger son receives his share of the family estate, was a favorite subject for American printmakers in the mid-nineteenth century, when moral tales were widely used to instruct and entertain households. Nathaniel Currier issued this hand-colored lithograph in New York sometime between 1835 and 1856, a period when his firm was producing inexpensive images for a broad middle-class market. The scene draws on the Gospel of Luke, where a son demands his inheritance, leaves home, and later returns in repentance. Collectors of Currier work often note how such religious subjects sat alongside sporting, rural, and political scenes in the firm's catalog.
