This poster prints the opening line of "America the Beautiful," a lyric whose plea for "brotherhood" took on sharper meaning in 1970, when the catalog links it to civil rights and the Vietnam War. Katharine Lee Bates wrote the poem after a visit to Pikes Peak in 1893, and it was later set to Samuel Ward's tune. Franklin Merchandising Company issued posters like this as mass-produced wall decor during the prop art craze, aimed at college dorms and young households. Gary Yanker later gathered such pieces in his 1972 book *Prop Art*, which shows how protest-era sentiment reached ordinary bedroom walls.
