Seated full length in a chair, Hughes holds a grandson on his lap while his son, Charles Evans Hughes Jr., leans on the chair arm beside him. The portrait dates to about 1916, the year Hughes resigned his seat as an associate justice of the Supreme Court to accept the Republican presidential nomination. He lost that narrow race to Woodrow Wilson, but the photograph shows a more domestic side of a public man at a moment when his national profile was at its height.
